Liability & Safety — Notefoot
Effective November 2026
Notefoot is about real places. That makes it different from most apps, and it comes with real-world risks that no software can remove. This page explains those risks plainly and what is, and is not, our responsibility. It works together with the Terms of Service; if there is a conflict, the Terms of Service control.
1. Location is approximate — always
Notefoot's place features rely on consumer GPS and map data. In the real world:
- GPS accuracy varies with your phone, buildings, terrain, and weather. A "100 feet" unlock distance can in practice behave like 30 feet or like 300 feet.
- A note's saved location is where the poster's device believed it was standing, which may not be exactly where they were.
- Place names and map features come from map data that can be incomplete, out of date, or wrong.
Do not treat any location shown in Notefoot as precise, current, or safe to rely on for navigation or for finding a person.
2. Sealed notes are not a security system
Sealing a note means the app holds it back until a viewer's device reports it is near the drop point. It does not mean:
- That the content is encrypted against anyone standing there. Anyone in range, in the audience, can open it, hear it, and copy it.
- That the reported location cannot be faked. Determined users can spoof a device location. Sealing stops casual access, not determined access.
- That a note will unlock exactly at the boundary, or at all, in places with poor GPS (indoors, dense cities, canyons, tunnels).
Never seal content whose disclosure would cause real harm, embarrassment, or loss. If it has to stay secret, do not post it.
3. Going to places
- Notes may be dropped anywhere a user has been: private land, closed areas, dangerous terrain, places that are unsafe at certain hours or in certain conditions. A note existing somewhere does not mean the place is public, open, legal to enter, or safe.
- You are responsible for your own movement and decisions: checking access, ownership, hours, weather, and conditions; obeying the law and posted signs; and not trespassing.
- Do not drop notes that invite people into dangerous, illegal, or private places, and do not use notes to lure, follow, or ambush any person. Doing so breaks the Terms of Service and may break the law.
- We are not responsible for injuries, losses, arrests, or other consequences arising from travelling to, or being at, any place connected with a note, a message, or another user.
4. Meeting people
People you meet through Notefoot are strangers until you know them well, including people whose notes you have enjoyed for months.
- Use ordinary caution: meet in public places, tell someone where you are going, keep your phone charged, and leave any situation that feels wrong.
- Never share your home address, financial information, or your recovery phrase with anyone you met on the service. Notefoot staff will never ask for your password or recovery phrase.
- Parents and guardians are responsible for supervising minors in their care. Notefoot is 13+, is not directed at children under 13, and is not a child-safety tool.
5. User content is not verified
Notes, place names, claims about places ("this trail is open", "the water is safe"), stories, and profiles are written by users. We do not verify them and do not endorse them. Conditions at real places change. Check authoritative sources before relying on anything a note says about safety, access, or conditions.
6. Calls and messages
Voice and video calls connect you directly with other users. We do not monitor or record calls. Anything another participant says, shows, saves, or records during a call or conversation is that person's responsibility. Block and report anyone who misuses calls or messages; see the Terms of Service for reporting.
7. Your data, your backups
Accounts are protected by a password and an optional recovery phrase that we cannot read or reset. If you lose both, the account and its content cannot be recovered by us. Keep copies of recordings and photos that matter to you outside Notefoot; deletion, account loss, device failure, or service shutdown can make content unavailable permanently.
8. The limits, stated once more
To the maximum extent permitted by law, the Notefoot operator is not liable for: anything that happens at a real-world location; the accuracy of any location, place name, or user content; the conduct of any user on or off the service; or losses arising from reliance on a sealed note staying sealed. The full liability limits are in section 11 of the Terms of Service.
